Electric Boogaloo

Noot 100 and the Apollo Exhibit

This weekend, 10/14 to be exact, mark’s Noot d’ Noot‘s 100th performance and will take place during the Star Bar‘s 20th birthday celebration (going on through October). It will be a momentous Occasion come Friday night.

Judi Chicago and The Back Pockets will open, probably starting around 10pm and you know it’s going late. Check out the Noot bandcamp to peep some of their studio work and stay tuned for some guest dj sets from Noots’ Bimbi, Dookie and Dream Sanitation on the Electric Boogaloo in the future, as well.

Also of note, the Atlanta History Center will feature the traveling exhibit which is celebrating the history of the 125th St. Apollo Theater. Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment opened last weekend and will run through March 4, 2012. It’ll follow the theater from its burlesque beginnings and through its two shutterings and revivals featuring artifacts such as the gem below which could only belong to a true Sex Machine.

Funkalendar is What’s Up

Lot’s of good shows coming up in and around the A-town, as usual. Not that you hippy-hop heads need reminding, but the A3C is going on this weekend, and it’s kind of a big deal. On the funky tip however, here’s What’s Up with What’s Going Down:

I haven’t personally been out to the Nest for a Sunday yet, and that is my bad but don’t let it be yours. It’s going to be a regular dealio for the forseeable future with Jason on guitar, joined by Kevin Scott (Soulphonics, Col. Bruce, Atl. Funk Society) on bass and Duane Trucks (Atl Funk Societey, among others) on drums and a host of other cats.

Git it while it’s hawt y’all, and don’t be caught in the wrong place and/or time!

Electric Boogaloo Playlist for 09.29.11

First, special thanks for Justin Melotte of the Fiasco for popping in the studio last week. He’s also a founding member of the Etowah River Music Festival, taking place this Friday and Saturday, October 7th and 8th at the Etowah River Campgrounds. Camp out, jam out and have a funky good time. Here’s the Fiasco at last year’s Summer Shade Fest in Grant Park:

Another late breaking show going on this Friday is the Martans (formerly Wauchope Krewe), a cajun funk outfit, featuring one of the best ‘boners in town in Jonathan Lloyd (Cadillac Jones, Atlanta Funk Society, Lloyd’s Rocksteady Revue, etc.) The Martans will be blessing an Atlanta institution, The Northside Tavern this Friday. Look for the official listing later this week in an updated “What’s Up With What’s Going Down!”

Electric Boogaloo Playlist for 09.22.11

A couple special announcements before we get to last week’s playlist:

First, founders of the Etowah River Music Festival will be joining the crew in studio this week to tell us about the event, taking place October 7th and 8th at the Etowah River Campgrounds and featuring our friend Uncle Joe’s Medicine Show, Georgia Soul Council and a whole lot more . Haven’t confirmed, but we’ll potentially have a weekend pass or two to give away on air, too. So definitely check it out as Treacherous is on call for the setlist this Thursday.

Secondly, and this is quite short notice, but the Midtown Art Cinema (10th and Monroe) is showing Soulthunder, the story of the reunion of Conrad Johnson and the Kashmere Stage Band, exec-produced by Jamie Foxx. It’s sure to be a heart touching story with some seriously bad funk on the soundtrack, but it only runs through this Thursday. You’ve got eight more chances to catch it with Wednesday and Thursday show times of 2:15, 4:35, 7:35, and 9:40.

Ok, finally, the playlist from last week, on which The Price is Right held it down quite solidly. Pick up the stream here! or embedded in the Electric Boogaloo home page.

Tune in this week as The Price is Right gets you back in the groove Thursday night from 11pm to midnight. There’ll maybe even an El-Dogg sighting.

Not much else to discuss, here, but we’ll update the What’s Up? concert listing as its warranted. The Atlanta Funk Society will be playing this Thursday 9/22 at The Five Spot along with the 16 Bars Hip-Hop Orchestra. Classic hip-hop played by a live band? It’s like a reverse sampling of classic funk. Yes, please, and thank you. For the other listings, check out our latest What’s Up With What’s Going Down post from last week. Until next time, Love Your Life…
